Within the framework of the UN in New York, on the initiative of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Group of Friends of Mountain Countries was created and its first constituent meeting took place on August 29, 2019.
Representatives of UN member states took part in the event. During the meeting, the Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN Mirgul Moldoisaeva noted the initiatives of the Kyrgyz Republic within the UN, in particular the proclamation of December 11 as International Mountain Day and the holding of various international events in support of the conservation of fragile mountain ecosystems and representatives of flora and fauna. In order to further advance issues on the mountain agenda, Permanent Representative Mirgul Moldoisaeva announced the creation of the Group of Friends of Mountain Countries and informed about its main goals and objectives.
During the meeting, the participants expressed gratitude to the Kyrgyz side for organizing the Group of Friends of Mountain Countries and discussed the most pressing issues of its work and further areas of cooperation.
Following the meeting, the following countries joined the Group of Friends of Mountain Countries: Austria, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Andorra, Bolivia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Georgia, Canada, Nepal, Switzerland and Tajikistan.
