Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions
The Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions (2023–2027) is a global initiative launched by the United Nations General Assembly upon the proposal of the Kyrgyz Republic. Building upon the outcomes of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development (2022), the initiative seeks to raise global awareness of the vulnerability of mountain ecosystems and the specific development challenges faced by mountain countries. Mountains are essential sources of freshwater, energy, food, and biodiversity, but due to their geographic remoteness, they are particularly exposed to environmental and socio-economic risks.
The Five Years of Action aims to strengthen international partnerships, generate innovative policy solutions, and reinforce the political voice of mountain countries in the global arena. It supports coordinated action in areas such as climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, green infrastructure, sustainable agriculture, cultural cooperation, and academic exchange.
The initiative also promotes the mobilization of investment, technology, and scientific research to build resilience and prosperity in mountain regions.
The Kyrgyz Republic is now preparing to host the second summit — Bishkek+25 — in 2027. This summit will serve as a global gathering to reaffirm political commitment and shape the future of sustainable mountain development. The Five Years of Action offers a vital platform for uniting mountain countries, institutions, and stakeholders to build a resilient and inclusive mountain future.
